Dick Gross | From Local Council Mayor to Writing a Musical | The Art Hunter | Ep 57 | Now LIVE

In this episode of The Art Hunter, David Hunt talks to writer and musical composer Dick Gross about his journey through local politics whilst being an author and the composer and writer of several musicals.

Dick Gross is the former four-time Mayor of the City of Port Phillip, former President of the Municipal Association of Victoria, and a Fellow at the University of Melbourne. In 2010, Gross was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia, “for service to local government, particularly through the Municipal Association of Victoria, as a contributor to environmental reform initiatives in the area of waste management, and to the community of Port Phillip.”

He is also an author with seven books to his name including “Zac: Hats in Cool Town” (published in 2014) and “Death by Elegy” (published in 2011) and the writer, composer, and producer of several musicals including a new musical “Not Finished With You Yet” which premieres in March 2023 at the Alex Theatre in St Kilda.

It’s a buoyant, occasionally saucy musical, the protagonists fight the system to stay together. Twenty songs explore not only the nature of love in its middle stages but confront middle-aged issues such as the existential significance of kids (or otherwise), post-menopausal sex, masturbation, and male midlife crisis.

In The Art Hunter, David Hunt explores the artist with an in-depth look into their background; where they came from, the type and work they do, their latest work, and where they see the future.
